Using Technology (CGM and Pumps) for Diabetes Management in Pregnancy: Practical Strategies and Clinical Pearls

This course is designed as a collaboration of maternal fetal medicine specialists and endocrinologists to broaden the knowledge base and increase familiarity and comfort with using diabetes technology (continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps) in pregnant individuals with all forms of diabetes (GDM, Type 1 and Type 2). Attendees will become facile with reading continuous glucose monitor (CGM)-derived glycemic metrics and reports, learn the different continuous insulin infusion systems (pumps) and pregnancy hacks to help reach pregnancy-specific glucose targets, and identify clinical pearls in management strategies to optimize incorporation of CGM into clinical practice for different patient populations. The course will also discuss strategies for incorporating diabetes technology workflow into office based visits and regularly scheduled glucose review including remote monitoring and telehealth options. Case-based learning from experts will provide practical examples of real life clinical scenarios with a step-by-step workflow for how best to interpret and synthesize CGM data with clinical management. The course will also review the current barriers to care and health disparities in access and utilization of diabetes technology for all pregnant individuals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe evidence for CGM in pregnant patients with diabetes (T1D, T2D, GDM) and remaining knowledge gaps
  • Interpret CGM reports and make treatment recommendations.
  • Identify clinical workflows for integration of CGM management in their clinical practice- both office based and telehealth
  • Discuss risks and benefits of different insulin pump therapy options in pregnancy.
  • Employ methods of assisting commercially available off-label hybrid-closed loop systems in pregnancy.
  • Identify and address barriers to both access and use of CGM technology in clinical practice of pregnant individuals.
