MD/PhD Student
University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Medicine
Bani Medegan Fagla graduated with a B.S. in biotechnology and a minor in chemistry with honors from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2013. She is currently a third-year medical student in the MD/PhD (MSTP) program at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine (UICCOM). She has recently completed her Ph.D. in the Graduate Education in bioMedical Sciences (GEMS) program with a concentration in Integrative and Translational Physiology, under the supervision of Dr. Irina Buhimschi. Her doctoral thesis focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms underlying pregnancy-associated protein misfolding, including the contribution of APOE genetic polymorphisms to these processes. Through diverse research experiences over the last 10 years, Bani has acquired broad expertise in molecular biology and cell biology methods, as applied to cancer biology, microbiology, immunology, genetics, and pregnancy pathophysiology. Bani is dedicated to utilizing her dual degree and research expertise to address global health disparities, including gaps in maternal and perinatal health; and has been actively involved in global surgery advocacy, education, and research.
