Richard Burwick, MD, MPH, is Associate Professor and Associate Fellowship Director in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Dr. Burwick obtained his undergraduate degree from the Johns Hopkins University, Medical School degree from UC San Francisco, and Masters’ degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. He completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UCLA-Harbor, and Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Burwick has a strong research interest in complement biology and he studies the role of complement proteins in preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, and most recently COVID-19. He is principal investigator on two clinical trials investigating complement blockade to treat preeclampsia and COVID-19. He has led multiple preeclampsia biomarker studies in the United States and Colombia South America, and he has over 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Burwick is a full-time clinician and consults regularly on high-risk pregnancies, with a special interest in preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and blood and kidney disorders in pregnancy. He is a sought-out and highly regarded speaker, both nationally and internationally.
