Assistant Professor

Dr. Stephen McCartney, MD/PhD is an Assistant Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington. His research interest is understanding how the immune system is involved in maintenance of normal pregnancy, as well as how alterations in immune and inflammatory pathways can lead to pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction. Dr. McCartney completed his MD/PhD degrees at Washington University in St. Louis and clinical training through Obstetrics and Gynecology residency and Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship at the University of Washington. Since starting his own laboratory in 2021, his research uses high-parameter flow cytometry, single-cell analysis techniques, and metabolomics assays to investigate the role of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), which detect both inflammatory and metabolic signals, in the placenta and uterine decidua. He also studies the role of immunometabolism at the maternal fetal interface in normal and abnormal pregnancy. The overarching goal of his research program is the identification of novel immune targets and therapeutics for early diagnosis, prevention, and novel treatments of pregnancy complications.
