Professor Aris Papageorghiou, MD FRCOG FAIUM (Hon) is Professor of Fetal Medicine at the University of Oxford, and Research Director of the Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute. He is also a full Professor St George’s Hospital in London, where he contribites to National Health Service (NHS) clinical services. He is also Editor-in-Chief of BJOG; and Chair of the WHO Maternal and Perinatal Health Guidelines Advisory Group.
Aris leads a large research group with an interest in maternal, fetal and perinatal health using diverse methods, including clinical epidemiology, trials, data synthesis and implementation science. Particular interests are large-scale cohorts and trials in underserved regions, using ultrasound, biomarkers and clinical methods to improve phenotyping and outcomes. One of his major research lines is in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in imaging and he founded the Oxford spin-out, Intelligent Ultrasound. Committed to globally accessible education, he also founded www.scan.academy during the pandemic.
Aris is a prolific academic with over 500 original articles and an h-index of 95. He has received many honors, including a prestigious Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Athens; Honorary Fellow Award of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine; and Fellowship of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Since 2022 he serves as Editor-in-Chief for the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 2024 he was appointed Chair of Maternal and Perinatal Health Guidelines Technical Advisory Group for the World Health Organisation.
