Medical Student
University of California, San Francisco
Kerman, California, United States
Alejandro is a third-year medical student at the UCSF School of Medicine with a background in microbiology and a passion for addressing health inequities in underserved communities. He grew up in the rural agricultural towns of Cantua and Kerman, California, as the son of immigrant farmworkers from La Piedad, Michoacán. Alejandro earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from UC Davis in 2022.
From a young age, Alejandro’s parents emphasized education as a priority, instilling in him resilience and a strong work ethic. Working in the fields alongside his parents from the age of 14, Alejandro gained firsthand insight into the contributions of farmworkers of color in sustaining the global food supply and the systemic barriers they face in accessing culturally sensitive healthcare.
This experience informs Alejandro’s research interests, which focus on exposing and addressing health inequities in his home community of California's Central Valley, particularly within the Latinx population. He is especially interested in research within the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, and improving perinatal health outcomes for underserved populations.
Outside of medicine, Alejandro enjoys photography, traveling, and spending time in nature.
