Wrap-up and Evaluations

Maternal Mortality and Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) continue to rise in the United States. Maternal critical care simulation courses may provide as an educational resource for providers to decrease SMM and maternal mortality. Although “table top” courses are indeed essential, “hands on” simulations is important as well.

Simulation provides an extra layer of knowledge and skills for providers to practice newly learned materials in a setting which may be similar to real life. Simulation also helps with global awareness, closed-loop communication, and familiarity among team members.

We are excited to offer an in-person simulation course that is central to maternal critical care. The teams will rotate through our 4 different stations. Each station will have two different parts: a simulation and a skill station (See below). We will tackle the main harbingers of SMM and maternal mortality: sepsis, drug abuse, cardiac disease, and postpartum hemorrhage. We will also have skills stations which will teach the following: intraosseous access (IO), intravenous access, compression sutures for postpartum hemorrhage, Bakri placement, Jada placement, packing a pelvis with abthera vacuum device, EKG review, and how to administer anti-opioid medications.

As we have done in prior years, the initial proposed faculty will recruit MFM faculty, presents, and leaders in the field to help with this course.
