Dr. Bukky Akingbola is a fourth-year resident physician in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women’s Health at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. She is a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion within medical education and healthcare, particularly for underrepresented trainees and patients.
Dr. Akingbola holds leadership roles at both local and national levels. She serves as a resident representative on the University of Minnesota Graduate Medical Education Committee and as the OBGYN Class of 2025 Program Representative. She has championed the intentional recruitment of diverse residents and the importance of inclusivity in clinical environments. Her commitment to equity and leadership informs both her clinical and advocacy work, and in recognition of this, Dr. Akingbola was recently elected Education Chief for her residency program for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Nationally, Dr. Akingbola has contributed to organized medicine through her involvement in the American Medical Association (AMA), where she co-led a coalition of trainees that successfully advocated for the recognition of racism as a public health crisis. She is also Chair Elect for the Organization of Resident Representatives within the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dr. Akingbola’s advocacy work includes improving the transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education, focusing on marginalized applicants.
Clinically, Dr. Akingbola is dedicated to addressing disparities in maternal health, with a particular interest in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. She will begin her fellowship training in this field at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine in August 2025.
A native of Woodbury, Minnesota, Dr. Akingbola earned her B.S. in Neuroscience from the University of St. Thomas, and her M.S. and Doctorate degrees from Lincoln Memorial University.
