Ashley Hesson, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is also appointed in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine (Department of Internal Medicine). She is the Director of Research for the Cardio-Obstetrics program and Co-Director of the Frankel Cardiovascular Center Michigan Biological Research Initiative on Sex Differences in Cardiovascular Disease.
Dr Hesson earned her MD/PhD at Michigan State University. Her PhD is in Linguistics, with a focus on quantitative Sociolinguistics as applied to patient-physician interaction. She completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan, where she then stayed to complete fellowships in Maternal Fetal Medicine and Cardio-Obstetrics. During fellowship, she held an NIH T32 and obtained additional training in translational approaches to pregnancy-mediated cardiovascular disease. Her present work is focused on the pathophysiologic characterization of preeclampsia super-imposed on chronic hypertension. Her longterm interests include the optimization of cardiovascular care during pregnancy and the development of patient-oriented counseling protocols to facilitate permpartum transitions for women with known cardiac disease as well as risk factors for cardiovascular events.
