Dr. Sarahn M. Wheeler is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Wheeler was born and raised in Mt. Laurel, NJ. She graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University. She completed medical school at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Wheeler went on to residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and she completed her Maternal-Fetal Medicine sup-specialty training at Duke University School of Medicine.
Dr. Wheeler currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Wheeler is an active researcher focused on eliminating race disparities in preterm birth. She has received generous funding via the Duke Population Health Improvement Award, the Duke REACH Equity Center career development award and she recent KL2 scholar graduate. During her KL2 time, she earning a Masters in Health Sciences in Clincial Research. Dr. Wheeler’s research is focus on disparities in preterm birth that impact black families. Dr. Wheeler is also a practicing clinician. She serves as the Director of the Duke Prematurity Prevention Program, a multidisciplinary clinical program providing care to women at risk for preterm delivery. Dr. Wheeler also serves as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In this role, she leads multiple projects geared toward maintaining an inclusive environment where the diverse talent in the Duke OB/GYN department can thrive.
In addition to her service at Duke, Dr. Wheeler is active on the state and national levels. She was selected to serve on the North Carolina Institute of Medicine Maternal Health Task Force. She is the Chair of the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM) Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
