My laboratory has been actively engaged in understanding the molecular mechanisms behind the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) for the past 5 years. We study perturbations in pregnancy and associations with maternal and neonatal morbidity with maternal obesity, thyroid hormone changes, metabolic endotoxemia and tobacco smoke or electronic cigarette exposure. As an investigator on the Baylor-Rice-UTMB Superfund Research Program, our laboratory is using metabolomics, RNA-Seq, epigenomics and metagenomics to uncover associations between exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and an increased risk of preterm birth.
