Melissa L. Russo is a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine and clinical genetics. She currently works at Women and Infants Hospital, an affiliate of Alpert Medical School at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She pursued her residency in obstetrics and gynecology and fellowship training in maternal fetal medicine and clinical genetics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.
One of her areas of interest is prenatal genetics education and improving equity in genetic testing along with improve genetic health literacy for those considering prenatal genetic testing. Her work is examining motivations and decision making related to prenatal genetic screening in English and Spanish-speaking persons and developing decisional aids to assist patients with varied health literacy in decisions related to prenatal genetics.
Her research on pregnancy in individuals with aortopathy, funded by the Marfan Foundation, is centered on reproductive and pregnancy health in individuals with a genetic predisposition for aortic disease and dissection including Marfan, Loeys-Dietz and vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndromes. This research is focused on determining the risk factors for aortic dissection in pregnancy and better characterizing obstetrical and cardiovascular outcomes for the mom and fetus during pregnancy. Her leadership roles in this arena include serving on the Professional Advisory Board for the Marfan Foundation, ACOG genetics committee and member of numerous research consortiums surrounding her field of interest including HOPE, Montalcino Aortic Consortium (MAC), GenTAC Alliance and vascular Ehlers Danlos Research Consortium.
